Day #61: Rain and thunderstorms overnight. At 3 A.M. Mike and I were both up and we were sure that we would not be traveling as it was storming with very strong winds. Alarm was set and we were up at 5:00 A.M. There was no wind when we got up so we checked the weather the winds were to increase slightly during the day with no thunderstorms until evening. We decided that we were going to leave for Chicago. We were on the water at 6:00 A.M. as were passing our friends on "Club Ed", Ed stuck his head out to say goodbye. Suzanne texted a short time later both wished us well. We had fog as we left the break wall in Racine. We had a heavy fishing charter fleet in the fog and one charter boat didn't have his running lights on in the fog. 7:10 A.M. we passed Kenosha and at this time the fog was mostly lifted with waves one foot or less. At 8:10 A.M. we crossed the Wisconsin/Illinois boarder. The Chicago skyline was visible from about 40 miles out. There were spotty showers going around us but we never did get wet. 10:00 A.M. the breeze increased 10-12 miles per hour out of the south with increase in the seas of 1-2 feet, At 12:00 P.M. we had a wind shift out of the southwest 10-15 miles per hour with slight chop over the south swell. At 12:45 P.M. we passed the Wilson Avenue Crib Light. At 1:11 P.M. we passed the Dever Crib Light. Coming into Chicago Harbor there were sailboats, powerboats, water taxis, large yachts causing large wakes with the waves also increased by the winds. Mike did a great job getting us into the harbor safely. At 1:50 P.M. we were secure at DuSable, slip E-60. Winds gusting from 15-20 miles per hour. We traveled 62.2 miles today (total 629 miles for the trip) Kevin and Sandy from "Kostal Karma" came aboard they were heading to the beach and Jazz Fest. Mike and I decided that we were going to head to Navy Pier. There were a ton of people very hard to walk to the pier. We found Margaritaville right away and there was no wait so we stopped to have cheeseburgers and margaritas. It took a bit but Mike was finally able to score me a t-shirt. We headed back to the boat for a break. There are suppose to be fireworks off of Navy Pier at 9 P.M. tonight. We are bracing for thunderstorms again this evening, More touring of Chicago tomorrow.
